Thriving in the Southeast
Raising a dog in Georgia, Florida, Alabama, and the broader Southeast comes with unique regional considerations. From managing the brutal summer heat to protecting your new SouthEast Doodles puppy from local parasites, local knowledge is critical.
Beating the Heat
Doodles have thick, insulating coats. During a Georgia summer, they can overheat rapidly.
- Walk Times: Restrict walks and vigorous outdoor play to the early morning (before 9 AM) and late evening (after 7 PM).
- The Asphalt Test: Press the back of your hand against the pavement for 7 seconds. If it's too hot for your hand, it will severely burn your puppy's paw pads.
- Summer Grooming: Ask your groomer for a shorter summer cut. They will be much more comfortable and dry off faster after swimming.
Regional Health & Safety
The Southern climate is a breeding ground for parasites.
- Heartworms: Mosquitoes transmit heartworms, which are fatal if left untreated. Year-round, uninterrupted heartworm prevention (like Heartgard or Simparica Trio) is absolutely non-negotiable in the Southeast.
- Fleas and Ticks: Year-round prevention is equally critical. Ticks carry Lyme disease and Alpha-gal syndrome.
- Water Safety: Beware of stagnant water, which can harbor harmful algae, and always be vigilant about alligators if you live near natural lakes or retention ponds in the lower Southeast.
Local Adventures
Once your puppy is fully vaccinated and old enough, Georgia is incredibly dog-friendly!
- Hiking: The North Georgia mountains offer spectacular trails. Just remember to pack plenty of water and a collapsible bowl.
- Patios & Breweries: Atlanta, Savannah, and surrounding suburbs are filled with dog-friendly patios. This is a fantastic way to passively socialize an adult dog to crowds and noises.
- Beaches: If traveling to the coast (like St. Simons or Hilton Head), remember to rinse the salt water and sand thoroughly from your dog's coat to prevent severe skin irritation and hot spots.
With the right preparation, the Southeast is a wonderful place for a doodle to grow up!
