When families decide to bring a Goldendoodle into their homes, one of the most exciting (and sometimes confusing) decisions to make is choosing the right size. Because Goldendoodles are a crossbreed between a Golden Retriever and a Poodle—and because Poodles come in several distinct sizes themselves—the resulting doodle puppies can range anywhere from a highly portable 10 pounds up to a robust 80 pounds.

Micro Goldendoodles
Micro Goldendoodles (sometimes called "Teacup" or "Petite") are the absolute smallest variation of the breed. They are typically produced by breeding a Toy Poodle with a very small Mini Goldendoodle (often an F1b or F1bb generation).
Because of their tiny stature, Micro Goldendoodles are exceptionally portable. They are perfect for apartment living, frequent travelers, and families looking for a lap dog that can easily join them on flights.
However, their small size makes them more fragile. We generally do not recommend Micro Goldendoodles for households with very young, boisterous toddlers, as the puppy can be easily injured if accidentally stepped on or dropped.
Mini Goldendoodles
Mini Goldendoodles are perhaps the most popular size in the United States today. Created by crossing a Golden Retriever (or a Goldendoodle) with a Miniature Poodle, these dogs hit the "sweet spot" for many families.
They are small enough to adapt comfortably to condo or apartment living, but sturdy enough to enjoy a brisk hike, a game of fetch in the backyard, or playtime with respectful children.
Mini Goldendoodles offer the joyful, golden personality in a much more manageable package. If you are looking for a fantastic family dog that doesn't take up the entire sofa, a Mini Goldendoodle is often the perfect choice.

Medium & Moyen Goldendoodles
The Medium Goldendoodle—often referred to as a Moyen Goldendoodle—bridges the gap between the Mini and the Standard. "Moyen" is the French word for medium, referencing the Moyen Poodle size recognized in Europe.
Mediums are fantastic for active families who want a dog large enough to easily keep up on long runs, camping trips, or beach days, but small enough that they are still easy to lift into a car or bathe in a standard bathtub.
They maintain a highly athletic build and a robust, sturdy frame, making them excellent playmates for older children and active adults.
Standard Goldendoodles
Standard Goldendoodles are bred using a Standard Poodle and a Golden Retriever. These are large, impressive, and deeply affectionate dogs.
If you have a spacious home with a fenced-in yard and love the feeling of a "big dog" presence, a Standard Goldendoodle is a magnificent choice. They are highly intelligent, incredibly loyal, and often make outstanding therapy dogs due to their calm, gentle demeanor and larger size, which is perfect for deep pressure therapy.
Keep in mind that their larger size means they require more space, more food, and significantly more time (and expense) on the grooming table!
Understanding Generations (F1, F1B, F1BB)
When discussing size, you will frequently hear breeders refer to generations. While generations primarily affect coat type and shedding, they also play a major role in a puppy's final adult size, as they dictate the percentage of Poodle genetics involved.
For example, an F1B Mini Goldendoodle is typically smaller than an F1 Mini Goldendoodle because it has a higher percentage of Miniature Poodle genetics.
Predicting Puppy Growth & Weight
It is a common question: "Exactly how big will my puppy get?"
Because Goldendoodles are a hybrid, Mother Nature always has the final say. A puppy from a 20-pound mom and a 20-pound dad will likely mature around 20 pounds, but it is not mathematically guaranteed; genetics can occasionally pull traits from grandparents.
A common formula used to estimate a doodle's adult weight is to take their weight at 16 weeks of age, multiply it by two, and add roughly 5 pounds. However, the most reliable indicator of a puppy's adult size is the size of its parents.
